(Richmond, VA) – On May 30, 2018, the Virginia House of Delegates and the Senate of Virginia approved the Commonwealth’s budget for the next two years. In doing so, both chambers agreed to join 32 other states in expanding Medicaid and provide 400,000 currently uninsured Virginians health coverage beginning January 1, 2019. Additional features of the $117.3 billion FY19-20 budget include a 3% pay raise for teachers and a 2% pay raise for state employees.
The General Assembly originally adjourned March 10, only to return to Richmond on numerous occasions before reaching an agreement this week. The issue of Medicaid expansion drove a sharp divide between leadership in the House and Senate.
